About
Me
Michael Vincent
Ziesing
My adventure on this planet began June 16, 1946 in El Paso Texas. God,
family, learning, teaching and beer are the most important things
in my life.
When I graduated
from Moorhead State University many years ago, the chairman of the
philosophy department said, "I hope you make
a mistake every day -- just not the same one." I have made plenty,
learned from most and failed to follow his advice more often than I care
to remember.
I've lived in four
countries for extended periods of time (America, Italy, Germany and
Thailand) and ten different U.S. states. I moved to Thailand in 1992
and have lived in Phuket, Udorn Thani (Ban Dung), Bangkok and Khukhan
(in Si Saket Province).
The impetus for coming to Thailand was a series of flukes that initially
led me to teach Asian Philosophy at the University level in the U.S.
While my degrees are in philosophy, I knew nothing about Asian Thought.
After learning as I taught for several semesters, I eventually got a rough
idea of what I was talking about. One day a student asked me where I had
been in Asia and, red-faced, I owned up to the fact that I'd never been
anywhere in the East.
At the end of the term, I called a travel agent and asked where I could
see, feel, touch, taste, hear and smell Buddhism. Without hesitation,
she said "Thailand." From the moment I set foot here I knew it was my
home. Back in the States, it took me awhile to get rid of all the materialistic
accoutrements I'd accumulated over the years, but I did. One hot
humid day in December of 1992 I arrived in Thailand with a backpack and
nothing else -- no work, no friends, no prospects and no worries.
I lived in Bangkok and taught at a University there for over ten years.
Now I live in Khukhan, a market town in Si Saket
Province in Northeast Thailand.. Most of the time I'm pretty happy
so I reckon I'll stick with it .
