Michael Ziesing Abstract This paper examines the relationship between second language fluency and the level of cultural literacy in the culture of the second language. Specifically, the paper discusses Thai speakers living in a Thai context in terms of English fluency and knowledge of Western culture. The results of an exploratory study show strong connections between the two notions. Popular culture, academic culture, humor and cultural imperialism are discussed. The paper tentatively concludes that cultural literacy is important in language fluency and should be emphasized in teaching and self-study alike. To read the complete article, click here.
