Credit Cards In Thailand

All major credit cards cards are widely accepted in Thailand

ATMs accept Plus, Star and Cirrus. It is also possible to get money from Visa, MC, AmEx, JCB, Diners at exchange booths but there is a fee.

Credit Cards accepted include Visa, MC, AmEx, JCB and DC at most of the large retail establishments, restaurants, hotels and travel agents. A surcharge of up to 5 percent (sometimes more) is usually added to the purchase..

Accepting credit cards is not as common "upcountry." Gas stations, except in major metropolitan areas, usually don't accept credit cards, nor do small shops except in tourist destinations.

It is wise to never let your credit card out of your sight and to have at least two credit cards in case there is a problem with one.

Keep a copy of your credit card details and the international phone number of the bank in a safe place.

Notify your credit card company that you will be in Thailand.

Remember, getting cash on your credit card is expensive. Try to conserve your cash and use your credit card whenever you can.

Debit cards: Debit cards associated with credit cards like Visa are not a problem and are accepted as credit cards. If you plan to use your USA (or other country) debit card, make sure to have the contact phone number and email of your banker so you can reach them without difficulty. Problems arise and you always need a backup source of cash.

Checks: Forget about cashing checks in Thailand.
